Municipality of Komen

The Municipality of Komen occupies an area of 103 square kilometres, extending from the Slovene-Italian border (where it borders with the Municipality of Duino-Aurisina/Devin-Nabrežina), on to the Branica Valley on the northern ridge of the Karst, where the area continues to the Vipava Valley, where it borders with the Municipalities of Miren-Kostanjevica, Nova Gorica, Ajdovscina, and Vipava on the Slovene side of the border, and with the Municipality of Doberdò sul Lago on the Italian side. The southern part of the Karst borders with the Municipality of Sezana. The Municipality of Komen includes 35 settlements or 20 village communities: Gorjansko, Brje pri Komnu, Brestovica pri Komnu, Klanec, Komen, Ivanji Grad-Zagrajec, Preserje, Volcji Grad, Sveto, Skrbina, Mali Dol, Tomačevica, Gabrovica-Coljava, Kobjeglava-Tupelce, Hrusevica, Stanjel, Kobdilj and Lukovec. In the Branica Valley there are the village communities of Gornja Branica and Lisjaki.

The whole area has a population of 3,515 inhabitants (according to the 2002 census). The centre of the municipality is Komen, which is also its administrative centre. Speaking in historical and architectural terms, the most widely known town is Stanjel, with its ancient fortified walls and castle complex on Turn Hill. The majority of the Karst population are employed in the nearby towns of Sezana, Nova Gorica, and Ajdovscina. Only a small part of the population is employed by small companies in Komen (Aluminij Oprema d.d., Aluminij Montal d.d., Iskra Avtoelektrika Livarna Komen d.d.) and some privately owned small industrial concerns.

Komen also has its own primary school called Osnovna šola Antona Sibelja Stjenka Komen and also a subsidiary school in Štanjel. Both towns also have kindergartens for pre-school children. Smallhold farming is a supplementary activity for the majority of the population. Over recent years the production of wine has seen an increased presence, which has gradually been replacing crop farming and stockbreeding. The importance of tourist services has also seen an increase, especially tourist farms, wine shops, and osmice. A number of families rent out rooms for tourist purposes.
